Hag Cove

This was originally designed as a module for D&D 5e. These were the guidelines used while running a group of four players through the mission to discover the fate of the lost ship.

Reported to the crew: Town Cryer contact, a Halfing called Biddy the Black, overheard a report of a supply ship running aground off the coast of Mavaria.

She’s not sure of affiliation or destination; a general call for assistance was put out by the ship via animal messengers – one ended up with the port authority and she overheard it

(Cryers get a cut when they give information to their contacts and it is successful)

Intro to the First Mate, Marina (selected by crew); and the Bosun, Gail (in charge of ship upkeep and the start/end of voyages)

Set sail – harmless encounter with a juvenile giant squid

Following the coordinates provided by Biddy, come upon a cove tucked behind a sheer cliff, with rocky access to shore; this area is not near any ports, and it’s not clear why anyone would come here. Possibly hiding in the cove? Exploring?

Upon arrival, there are two ships in the cove. One is the supply ship; one is an older wreck, dashed and splintered upon the rocks.

On closer inspection, there are no sandbars here, and the ship is anchored in the center of the cove, but there is no movement on deck.

Two rowboats are broken on the rocks, unmoving shapes inside and in the water around (9 bodies)

One more rowboat at older wreck, rope ladder descending from the ship to it, no one around.

(5 more bodies will be found in caverns)

Boarding supply ship:    Many bodies are orcish, goblin, bugbear, some humans – likely from Mavaria

A boat of this size generally takes around 20 crewmen, plus officers

Find 5 bodies on deck (including orc captain) and 4 more bodies around what looks like a fresh patch in the hull.

Most bodies have deep slashes in them, while some of them have looks of terror on their faces

Many crates have been destroyed – slashed open and contents spilled out. PCs can recover a few crates of various supplies – coal, raw ore, some foodstuff

Find captain’s quarters trashed, claw marks everywhere, a beautiful rug torn to shreds, every decoration shattered. Captain’s journal, still open on his desk, states that they’re a supply ship, The Bassett Hound, that was enroute from Mavaria to the Cragsen Theocracy. They hadn’t travelled very far from port when they had to take shelter in the cove from a bad storm. Sometime during the storm, their lower hull was damaged – perhaps it was an animal. Captain planned to send out a party in the morning to the wreck to see if there was anything to salvage from it. He notes that he’s never noticed this cove before – this part of the coast isn’t often travelled because of the rocks and sandbars

Boarding the shipwreck

Ship broken basically in half, with the back half of the ship inaccessible. Door to the captain’s quarters off its hinges, faint glow coming from inside.

Inside, a lantern has been knocked on its side, but flame is contained. The dimming light reveals crumbling ruins and strips of cloth, and a hobgoblin body ripped to shreds, facing towards the door, and away from a dark hole. The boards at the back of the captain’s quarters have been hacked apart, and where it should reveal the rocks, instead it backs against the dark entrance of a tunnel.

Into the caverns

In the first room to the right, they come across a cowering, eccentric-looking human man, with bangles on his arms, a clunky eye necklace, and a cloak of many patterns. He’s beside a goblin body. He calls himself Nile, and says he was sent with the others to investigate the ship, and found a treasure hoard guarded by an awful beast, and he’s the only one who escaped.

Nile leads them through the cave, they fight a giant spider that comes out of an alcove where bodies 3 and 4 are.

He leads them into the lair of 3 sea hags – for he is their servant, and they gift him powers.

Combat with hags commences
